It's hard right now to feel safe, even if the immediate danger is gone. As of today, the Almeda Fire is 100% contained. But it's hard to know if there will or won't be another fire to contend with. Relaxing, laughing, playing, or even resting can all feel especially radical right now in very uncertain times. Some of us jump into action to deal with stress and some of us retreat. Do what you need to feel okay and take care of your mental/emotional health, whatever that looks like for you.

Last Monday, Rory and I were visiting the Smith River (Tolowa Dee-nΓ ancestral lands) and enjoying the relatively clear skies and serene blue-green water. It was a happy, heart-is-full kind of day. Monday and Tuesday could not have been more of a contrast.

Tuesday morning, I got a text from our community alert system that a small fire had started in the north part of our town of Ashland. High winds had already begun whipping through and blowing branches down, leaves were everywhere. A little anxiety and dread started to set in and I realized it would be best to pack essentials just in case. Around 20 mins later I went to the alley in the back of my triplex to see a huge plume of smoke billowing - less than a mile and a half away. Parts of the town were already evacuating.

The rest of the day and week since have been awful and disorienting to say the least. The small fire grew so much and so quickly with the high winds that day and quickly blew northwards into the nearby towns of Talent and Phoenix. Much of those beloved communities has been burned to the ground. Literally just ash and remnants of foundations where whole apartment complexes and businesses used to be. It felt like living in a fiery nightmare, and even though firefighters were putting their lives on the line and working tirelessly with aerial crews, I believe Ashland was spared only because of the direction of the wind that day.

Some people only escaped with the clothes on their backs. Many people are displaced, either unable to return to their homes or without homes or jobs to return to. We as a community are still processing it all, and will be for a long time. Our friends, family, and neighbors are devastated and grieving but also uplifting and supporting each other in beautiful ways.

For anyone who feels compelled to help after reading this, you can find links to struggling families impacted by the Almeda Fire in my bio. Even a little bit helps. I had more to write but this post got too lengthy, so I will save it for another post. Thank you for reading and reaching out.

The Trinity Alps are really a gem, and close enough to visit within a couple hours' drive. The vibrant pink-purple fireweed grew in pockets around the lake, which was so still and serene it felt like swimming in a huge pool.

This piece was inspired by a pleasant stop exploring an Aspen Grove near Steen's Mountain in Eastern Oregon. The leaves and trees made the most relaxing, fluttering sound in the light summer breeze 🌬️ Creating this served as a mediation on the calm between order and chaos 🎨

Dear RK, Aug. 4th. I never would have imagined th Dear RK, Aug. 4th.

I never would have imagined that Sunday we met with the crazy clouds would have changed my life like it has. Little did I know we would not only be adventuring together but also surviving a pandemic and participating in a social revolution. I don't have many photos of us because you inspire me to be in the moment and savor it as much as you do. Thank you for your deep caring and understanding through the tough times and your support and encouragement through the good ones. You can always make me laugh no matter what mood I'm in. Thank you for teaching me a lot about love and trust and knowing my worth. You bring out the best in me and I look forward to what's to come, which I'm sure will be full of new adventures, excitement, love, challenges, and laughter.

Cheers to one year ❀️
